Who we are
Mike Haasl is an engineer, woodworker, and permaculture homesteader in the northwoods of Wisconsin. Mike is co-author of SKIP, a resource book written with permaculture pioneer Paul Wheaton. He spearheaded the development of the Northwoods Community Garden, a site for local gardeners to take advantage of abundant sun and rich soil. Mike’s enthusiasm for sustainability is what prompted him to learn—and now, teach—how to harvest and process wild rice.
Aimee Heavey is a biologist, outdoor guide, herbalist, and permaculture enthusiast in northern Wisconsin. Her experience as a National Park Ranger and Wilderness First Responder ensures your safety on the water. Aimee’s love of sustainable living and foraged foods piqued her interest in wild rice. She claims that wild rice season is “her favorite holiday!” (It is.)
Mike and Aimee met in 2020 and quickly bonded over their shared interests in sustainability and a deep reverence for Mother Earth. Since their meeting, they have co-instructed many classes together, and regularly dream of better ways to connect people and planet. They look forward to welcoming you to the Northwoods community and sharing the gifts of the harvest with you this year.
